I have those Dark is Rising editions, one of the few books kept from my childhood. They're great books and great covers. I'll have to check out the new editions. I remember they made a truly terrible movie version that had none of the feel/tone of the books.

I'm not against the updating per se, but you note something interesting about what these updates are reaching for. Like the covers are more akin to something on a video game than something that represents the "bookness" part of the book.

Golden books covers. Especially Little Red Riding Hood. I think the old ones were more arty. We are lucky to have golden Book collection on display at the Lake county Forest Preserve museum in Il. Liz S.

Looking online, the changes over time seem subtle, but they're clearly different today. I haven't thought about those books in a long time. A full set of vintage ones in fine condition will set one back a pretty penny.

I looked up a book we used to have in the house when my kids were young, "The Biggest Bear" by Lynd Ward. It seems that the cover has not changed, which is good to see.

I know I am late to the game - but as a middle school librarian, I DEFINITELY see the need to update. Maybe not this particular cover, but I know that students don't want to read books where old-fashioned looking kids are on the cover. I even have to update books about things that don't change a lot (for instance, books about feelings) because my students don't want to read about outdated-looking kids.
