Since I already ordered my copy of your book I won't get the 15% discount. Oh well. I'm sure it's worth paying full price for. Will definitely watch The Beekeeper. I'm so upset about our current political situation that would like the fantasy of someone to come in and save the day. Love seeing your recommendations. Book of Goose was a good one. My TBR pile keeps growing and growing.

I feel like we have a blueprint for dealing with this administration in this Bishop’s act of bravery and grace. And also the judge just talking about the Constitution. It’s a bit more understated this time but somehow more powerful.

I am struggling on how to deal with the daily horrors of this Administration. I had a good strategy and then yesterday I fell off the wagon. Consuming way too much news (honestly it wasn’t even spectacle, but real things that were happening like suspending scientific research, foreign aid and PEPFAR. Also some bad stuff in the E.O.’s), I was in a bad mood and felt sick. I didn’t read my book! So I once again had to do some digital cleaning (deleting social apps and deleting passwords because I knew I would just cheat and log into Safari) and putting time limits on things. It’s really hard to balance! We also have to beware of the temptation of “inner migration”. Liberal Russians did that and it didn’t work out well for them. Anyway I went back and read your post from November and found it helpful even while I still have lingering questions on how to deal with this difficult time.

It's a process that varies day-to-day, so you have to be able to give yourself some slack. I've been spending the weekend working with a group I belong to that works on issues of academic and educational freedom which has required me to think a lot about what the worst things that could be coming, and it has led to a couple of sleepless nights.

At the same time, we're brainstorming how to take proactive action to instantiate values that we think help make people more free, so there's hope, but it's a long struggle.

While all you right-minded people are thinking about a Beekeeper to act outside the law and to get this country back in shape, you should consider that this is what the Trump voters were after, too. Might not be such a great idea to put your faith in that model of justice.

I think if you read the full sentiments of my message, you'd find that I in fact do not endorse a Beekeeper-style approach to justice because it is, explicitly, a fantasy. I do not put any faith in that model of justice in the real world, but at the same time, one can't help but wonder where one is going to find justice at this time.

I get it, and I get the appeal of the fantasy of the guy who will break all the rules to set things right.

All I'm trying to do is register the painful irony of it.

"The Lord is my shepherd, now say hello to my little friend!" Indeed! an excellent few moments of escape, imagining that.

Ok but… maybe you have not seen Wicked. Elphaba is not going to stand for fake magic Wizard Trump going after the downtrodden. And not only will she satisfyingly destroy things, she’s gonna belt out loudly too, which you can ALSO do in your car. I’m just saying, it may also serve the purpose at the Oscars. Look to the western sky!

Not sure if you've seen the TV show Leverage, but based on this, I think you'd enjoy!

I love everything about this piece, John. I, too, LOVED The Beekeeper. I have some theories about Jason Statham and his values/morals via the roles he plays that are more complementary than he's often given credit for. Anyway, I digress. I always love reading your words, as they feel like a balm to the craziness of the world.

John, I will give The Beekeeper a look but I also went to my go-to for movies, IMDb -- there are some scathing reviews on there -- Jason Statham got some love but the plot feasibility/direction/other characters got some serious abuse.

Will be interesting to see how I take to it

Don’t get me wrong, it’s no great work of art, and there’s several spots where the limited budget is apparent. But it’s self-aware in its limitations, and really I’m just entertained by it.

Agree that it takes its genre to its logical illogical conclusion
