Thanks for your heart-felt tribute to EW. From the moment that I got my first issue more than 20 years ago, I fell in love with the magazine. It covered everything I enjoyed with a depth and enthusiasm that helped to broaden my tastes in movies, TV, music and always, books! I gave so many of my friends subscriptions to share the joy. I am saddened by the loss of yet another iconic publication.
I devoured this magazine each week for many many years. The writing was smart and they were often spot on with their music, movie, and book recommendations. It's been sad to watch the numerous changes happen over the years, as it clearly struggled. More Marvel covers, shorter articles, less groundbreaking recommendations, as clearly a more commercial voice took hold. Ah, the death knoll was hard to ignore. Thanks for the reminder that this magazine was a big part of curriating my past and current joys.
I don’t think Annihilation by Vandermeer would have made the splash it did without EW bringing it to folks’ attention - I went out and purchased/read it based on their rave review and forced my bookclub to join me (to mixed reviews). Definitely not a mainstream or clearly-defined genre read!
I remember being introduced to a bunch of books by EW that never would have gotten on my radar pre-social media. House of Leaves sticks out in my mind, like Annihilation does for you.
I was completely devastated when Sports Illustrated went to monthly. I had been a subscriber for nearly 50 years. I relied on SI for its up-to-date news. I always liked the in-depth articles, but it was the news I enjoyed the most. Arrrghhhh! Now we"re facing the demise of EW. I relied on them to keep me current with pop culture. I'm not a big tv watcher or movie goer, but as a librarian, I needed to know what is what so I can have intelligent conversations with my colleagues and customers. Let's give this another Arrrghhhh!

The New Yorker, as far as I‘m concerned, comes out Mondays not Thursdays
Apparently I'm not the only one with a continually growing stack of New Yorkers.
