I loved this column. I know it's cool to take the piss out of Ethan Hawke; I've dated so many grey-turtlenecked earnest would-be intellect who just didn't -quite- have it in him to put everything together, but got by on looks and charm, with whom I used to categorize him.
But: he doesn't have to keep trying, and I'm glad he does, and that his book is good.
Your last sentence is spot on. With maturity, I've learned to admire someone who keeps taking his swings, and in the service of interesting work. We need more people like Ethan Hawke, not fewer.
