Bless you John. This made me cry. Brilliantly put, and gives me some hope, watching all the way from the UK, that there is still enough rationality, decency and empathy in the US for the country and culture I used to look up to so fervently as a kid to save themselves from the disgraceful state they are currently in under Trump.

Yes to all you said and referenced, John, and a word from Hannah Arendt who said that the lies and distortions are intended to confuse and demoralize us, as much as the outrageous actions, so that we are sapped of the will to resist. Stay strong.

And they're breaking down the distance between right and wrong."

Bravo to you for stating so clearly what so many of us are feeling and experiencing. They want us to choose despair and capitulation, so I cling to hope and look ahead to the 2026 and 2028 elections and, also, impeachment.

Thank you.

Please don’t give in to justifiable despair. The Trump regime is definitely lying as a power play - it goes way beyond misdirection and spinning. I agree that calling out the lies, constantly, matters, and also recognizing that conservative think tanks have been planning and gaming this out for years - this is the point for organizing and resisting, which *is* happening, even if mainstream media undermines that narrative. The protests that came together within hours of Renee Good’s murder, and have built this weekend through the efforts of Indivisible and other groups, need to be recognized. The impulse to collectively call out lies and shameful actions on the part of those in power is what gives me hope for contrary humans (and I’d say the same for the hype about AI).

I so badly wanted one of those reporters to ask Trump the follow up question about how he defines morality.

Very, very well said. Thank you.

This wasn't your point but your post is very much about agency -- human agency -- and so are your posts about AI. Your post makes clear that human agency can be murderous. Would "self driving" ICE agents be preferable? You and I agree that the whole ICE agent let loose in the streets phenomenon is less than ideal, but I'm clear eyed about not romanticizing the human over the machine as a rule.

I truly don’t understand whatever point you’re trying to make, but my instinct is to not pursue it because I don’t think it’s going to be fruitful in this context.
